FiscalNote is a legal information and data company. They collect laws and regulations and help people understand how laws impact their organization.
 
When sailing, you need two pieces of information. 1. current location and 2. wind direction. The same applies to the building energy retrofit. You need to know 1. current status of your building (i.e., building energy usage & cost and building energy equipment and systems) and 2. regulations and incentives.
 
It was interesting to hear that collecting and selling data can actually be a business model. Because in our building energy industry, the data is publicly available for free. For example, the NYC annual building energy & water usage data is available via NYC Local Law 84 dataset, and the building equipment data is available through NYC Local Law 87 dataset. And, of course, policy and regulation updates are easily collectible through government websites.
 
Is there an existing software product or company that collects building energy-related regulations and building energy data? I see the gap between regulations and building owners. The government should lower the bar and make it way easier for building owners to conduct retrofit.
